Actuality Entailments and the Argument from Collapsed Duality

چکیده
Modal expressions—expressions like ‘must’ and ‘can’—figure importantly in our ability to think and talk about things that are non-actual: people who are not actual (e.g., ‘There could have been a Tom Collins’1), events that did not happen (e.g., ‘He could have been spreading rumors’), ways in which events that happen do not happen (e.g., ‘Rome could have been built in a day’), etc. These expressions are not, in general, required to represent what the actual world is like. Recently, however, certain environments have come to light in which these expressions (among other expressions that appear to be modals) are required to represent what the actual world is like. Consider, for example, that the following two sentences bear interpretations on which they differ with respect to whether it is entailed that we took the train:

Actuality Entailments: When the Modality is in the Presupposition
In the context of the study of modality in interaction with time, the phenomenon whereby a modalized proposition entails its non-modal counterpart has been known as an ‘actuality entailment’ since Bhatt (1999). The question that actuality entailments raise is how modal statements can be distinguished from their non-modal counterparts and how modal contributes meaning. The main idea that the pap...

The term ‘actuality entailment’ was coined by Rajesh Bhatt in his 1999 dissertation to describe the implicative inference that arises when ability modals combine with perfective aspect. This article investigates the nature of this inference and the contributions of aspect and modality, by surveying the environments in which it is found. Prior to Bhatt’s dissertation, the literatures on aspect a...
متن کاملStructure-Sensitivity in Actuality: Notes from a Class of Preference Expressions
The paper deals with the development of certain preference expressions (in particular 'rather') against the background of language change. Following results from narrow syntax, a diachronic reanalysis at the level of Logical Form is proposed. Synchronically, certain actuality entailments (Bhatt 1999/2006) are observed and a structural analysis capitalizing on Hacquard (2009) is proposed. This w...
متن کاملThe Overdetermination Argument versus the Cause-and-Essence Principle—No Contest
Scott Sturgeon has claimed to undermine the principal argument for Physicalism, in his words, the view that “actuality is exhausted by physical reality” (Sturgeon 1998, p. 410). In noting that actuality is exhausted by physical reality, the Physicalist is not claiming that all that there is in actuality are those things identified by physics. Rather the thought is that actuality is made up of a...
متن کاملLogico-semantic Aspects of Children’s Knowledge about the Universal Quantifier: New Empirical Evidence
It has been widely assumed that a universal quantifier such as every evokes an asymmetry among entailments in its first argument (i.e., the NP) and its second argument (i.e., the VP). In particular, the first argument of every is downward entailing (henceforth DE), whereas its second argument is non-downward entailing (non-DE). Entailment-sensitive linguistic phenomena, arising as a consequence...
